What to do on Audition Day
- Here are some basic helpful hints to consider for your audition day:
Audition Day Basics:
- Instrument should be in good working condition. Check this the night before!
- Play for your band director and friends as often as you can the weeks before your
audition.
- Take care of your body! Get lots of sleep and eat properly the night before and
the day of the audition.
Before the Audition:
- Don’t let yourself get distracted before your audition! There will be plenty of
time to visit with friends AFTER you play!
- If you have to wait for your audition, consider 1) taking a walk, 2) reading, 3)not
practicing between rounds. As a brass player you should take it easy on audition
day.
- Your warm-up on audition day should be easy, not too taxing. You can do
general “touch-ups” on the music.
- Expect to see a variety of personalities in the warm up room; Rude people,
“show-off” types, etc. and don’t be intimidated!
In the Audition Room:
- Rule #1 -Nothing beats audition day jitters like being well prepared.
- Deep breathing is vital and helps you combat any nervous butterflies you might
have.
- Don’t be afraid to take a little bit of time between the etudes you will have to play
when you are in the audition room.
- It’s okay to play a few tasteful notes in your audition room to adjust to the
acoustics, but adjust quickly!
