Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith National Brass Academy and a college band camp?

The National Brass Academy is a focused and fun week just for brass players. A band camp typically enrolls three to five hundred students while the Brass Academy is significantly less. The student will primarily work in large groups of no more than 25 and chamber groups of 4-10 students. Each participant will receive personalized attention from each member of the Apex Brass the entire week. For a talented and budding brass player there is no better way to spend a week of the summer than surrounded by professional brass faculty and a world class guest artist.

  • I am going to graduate from high school or college this year, can I still apply?

Yes. The Brass Academy is open to high school and college students.

  • What is the application fee? Should I send my application via express mail?

Your application must be postmarked by the due date, it is not necessary to pay for express mail. For tuition costs and deadlines click here.

  • Can I arrange my own housing?

All out of town participants are encouraged to stay in the apartments on campus, however participants may arrange their own housing if they have friends or family in the area or coming to the area. Please let us know your plans.

  • Where will I stay if I am not a commuter for the National Brass Academy?

Out-of-commuting distance and out-of-state participants will be housed in the Sebastian Commons Apartments.

  • What is the daily schedule going to be?

A detailed schedule will be given to participants once they arrive at the Brass Seminar, but the basic daily routine can be found here.

  • Is scholarship money available?

A limited amount of scholarship will be available, based on need and merit. Please e-mail Kevin Sanders for more information.

  • I play euphonium, can I apply?

Yes. Euphonium players who double on trombone may audition on both instruments, if they choose. If the player is outstanding on euphonium and trombone, he or she may be asked to double within their brass choir or chamber groups.
